I think this works because the transparency does not go beyond those involved in the original parties involved in the purchasing transaction. That said, let's keep UPC codes off of illegal drugs and prostitutes. :)

I think there's some good in openess when it comes to a scenario like the one you described. But I think that the failure happens when the people get involved. Without automatic anonymization, your information can be bought and sold because people are always corrupt, corruptable or just plain inept.

Everyone knows how quality of service goes down when a chain of restaurants gets too big. Good people just can't always be found. That's where the breakdown happens.

I remember having this discussion in 1995. "Gee, someone should find a way of escrowing or securing Internet purchases." Well, this is the next, next step.

I don't even want my credit card processor to be able to actually see/use/sell my information.
