Two of the (many) luminaries at Ludium last weekend were Randy Farmer and Richard Bartle, who are both well-known pioneers in the gaming field. Evidently, after the festivities concluded in Bloomington, both Richard and Randy set out independently in search of a local gaming establishment. Hilarity ensued, as recounted here by Richard himself.
Christian! Koithuo Lives, dude! That's why you were trying to get me drunk. :-)
Anyway, I posted the comment below elsewhere, but thought you might enjoy it as well:
Richard's recounting of Saturday's drop in at the Bloomington game store is quite accurate. He did leave out the part where, as Richard was getting close to saying the word "MUD1", I was pointing at him with the index fingers of both hands moving them toward and away like animated attention arrows...
You should have seen the store clerks eyes!
Previously, At Nick's bar in when one of the grad students asked me what I'd done, I replied "Co-Invented the Avatar and Graphical Virtual World", he'd expected I'd be able to pick up the beer tab. Saying "Mr. I-Co-Invented the Avatar!", implying I'd gotten rich off the work. Though I did draw pay-checks over those years, I never got a big cash-out. Neither has Richard. I did pay for the beer though.
I guess since we're not rich off of our work, all we get is bragging rights.
:-)

Viva La Koithuo!
Outed!
Little did you realize that Dr. Bartle was also one of the underground resistance group of freedom fighters for Koithuon independence!
And for the record, I was trying to get you drunk just for the fun of it.....no conspiritorial reasons. :-)
It was great meeting you guys, and look forward to staying in touch.

P.S. And its not too late to get rich off all your work ;-)
